A biography of Coleman Cox, based primarily on information from the Coleman Cox Papers, is posted on the Coleman and Roxanna Foster Cox page.
Coleman Cox was born in 1793 and died in 1859. We might expect to have very little record of his lifetime. On the contrary, he left a great deal for us to peruse. For whatever reason, it seems Coleman was a bit of a packrat and a saver. He kept tidbits of paperwork here and there that others would have thrown away. Then he passed it along to his son, Caswell, who passed it along to his son, Samuel, who passed it along to his son, Idris. Idris has preserved the material and digitized it for us.
The result is nearly 300 pages of hints about Coleman’s life. You will find it in four files, an index, pages 1-100, 101-200, and 201-275. The PDF files are large in size so they make take a bit of time for you to download, but they are here for you to explore. You may be the one who discovers a little hidden bit of information that none of the rest of us have noticed. If so, please let us know by adding a comment at the bottom of this page. We can learn together.!s
We also have a good number of records thanks to Coleman’s service during the War of 1812. His pension application, and particularly the efforts to get a pension for his wife, Roxanna, left us evidence about his marriage, where he lived, and some of the people who knew him. Go to the Photos section under our Family Tree and search for all the records we have on Coleman Cox. We are listing a few of the more significant items here.
